This CD is never dull. The band mixes roots music and rhythmic world music in their songs, all of which are devised by Simon Hudson himself. Hudson sings about love, grief, hope, about the search for his origins, his individual goals and thus many may respond indirectly, because in the end it comes up yet again to the big picture, getting a smart life together.

The album was financed on the crowdfunding website Pozible. Fans invested more than $10,000 in the success of the music of Simon Hudson Band. Since January 2016, the “Flight of the Earthman” tour is in full swing. Simon Hudson and his band embark on a journey from Victoria via Adelaide through to Sydney. They will also tour with concerts in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.”

Elf Songs sind auf dieser Platte, und wirklich jeder überrascht mit einer anderen Herangehensweise, einer eigenen Stimmung, abwechselnden Grooves und Rhythmen.

Auf dieser CD kommt an keiner Stelle Langeweile auf. Die Band mischt Roots-Musik und rhythmische Musik aus aller Welt in ihren Liedern, die alle von Simon Hudson selbst zusammengestellt sind. Teilweise donnern einem fette Bläsersetze und knackig gespielte Drums um die Ohren, allerdings ohne auch nur minimal zu nerven, dann wird wieder dezent, soulig aber mit beschwingt greifenden Rhythmen hantiert, die sich perfekt einbetten. Die musikalischen Einflüsse unter anderem von der wunderbaren Band Crowded House, Paul Simon und José Gonzáles sind mehrmals deutlich spürbar.
Entstanden sind viele der Songs auf ausgiebigen Tourneen, schließlich war Simon Hudson in den Jahren zuvor nicht nur in Australien, sondern in den USA und in Europa unterwegs, um diverse Konzerte zu geben.
Die Songtexte sind in einer Art Selbstfindungsphase entstanden. Ein Prozess, viele kennen das, der oft andauert und nicht gleich zum Ergebnis führt, hat Spuren auf dem Album hinterlassen. Entstanden sind dabei viele Titel, die erahnen lassen, dass dieser Prozess noch nicht abgeschlossen ist. Hudson singt dabei über Liebe, Trauer, Hoffnung, über die Suche nach seiner Herkunft, seinen individuellen Zielen und wird damit viele indirekt ansprechen können, weil am Ende geht es eben doch wieder um das große Ganze, ein gescheites Leben auf die Reihe zu bekommen.
Finanziert wurde das Album über die Crowdfunding-Website Pozible. Fans investierten mehr als 10.000 Dollar in den Erfolg der Musik der Simon Hudson Band. Seit Januar 2016 ist die “Flight of the Earthman”-Tour in vollem Gange. Simon Hudson und seine Band begeben sich auf eine Reise von Victoria über Adelaide bis hin nach Sydney. Ihren Abschluss findet die Tournee mit Konzerten in den Niederlanden, Belgien und Deutschland.”

Worldman Downunder Feeling

The Simon Hudson band from Melbourne does not fit stylistically in this series and that is why I was this morning, also at a loss what to do with the debut album Earthman. I had counted on rock. Or pop rock. Something Frontal with thrust and glitter and the touch of Diesel & Dust. Instead radiated towards me funky-jazzy rhythms, unobtrusive, velvety, easy and relaxed.

As I expected quite different music, I was quite taken aback. Actually I wanted to push away the album again, but something about the music has me but then fascinated and so the album was now alongside for a while.
Earthman is a really well-made album, whose music is somewhere between the relaxed soul, pop and world music. The quality of the music convinced.
In each song lies a different approach, other musical priorities are set. Correspondingly, the tone of the album from song to song converts. Time it is a combination of Latin and Swing, sometimes Jazzt it pleasantly discreet and warm, sometimes it sparks. The class of music comes to mind particularly characterized in that the Simon Hudson band throughout the album remains varied, without getting bogged down or get bored.

The band spread a nice mood. Unexcited yet very confident and just somehow always fit enhancing the music the day. Weltmännisches Downunder Feeling

Bei Musik aus Australien denke ich meistens zuerst an AC/DC, Midnight Oil, Kylie Mingue oder INXS und habe eher rockige Songs im Ohr. Die Simon Hudson Band aus Melbourne passt stilistisch so gar nicht in diese Reihe und darum war ich heute Morgen auch ziemlich ratlos, was ich mit dem Debütalbum Earthman anfangen sollte. Ich hatte mit Rock gerechnet. Oder Pop-Rock. Irgendetwas Frontales mit Schub und Glitter und dem Hauch von Diesel & Dust. Stattdessen strahlten mir funkig-poppige Rhythmen entgegen, unaufdringlich, samtig, easy und entspannt.

Da ich ganz andere Musik erwartet habe, war ich ziemlich verblüfft. Eigentlich wollte ich das Album schon wieder wegdrücken, aber irgendetwas an der Musik hat mich dann doch fasziniert und so lief das Album heute eine ganze Zeit lang nebenher.
Earthman ist ein richtig gut gemachtes Album, dessen Musik sich irgendwo zwischen entspanntem Soul, Pop und Weltmusik bewegt. Die Qualität der Musik überzeugt.
In jedem Song steckt ein anderer Ansatz, werden andere musikalische Schwerpunkte gesetzt. Entsprechend wandelt sich auch die Klangfarbe des Albums von Song zu Song. Mal ist es eine Kombination aus Latino und Swing, mal Jazzt es angenehm dezent und warm, mal funkt es. Die Klasse der Musik fällt mir besonders dadurch auf, dass die Simon Hudson Band über das ganze Album abwechslungsreich bleibt, ohne sich zu verzetteln oder mich zu langweilen.

Die Band verbreitet eine schöne Stimmung. Unaufgeregt und doch sehr souverän und einfach nur irgendwie immer passend untermalt die Musik den Tag. Auch wenn ich der Band damit vielleicht etwas unrecht tue, aber Earthman ist ein hervorragendes „jederzeit Album“, wenn man einfach nur schöne Musik dabei haben will, die sich nicht in den Vordergrund drängt. Dennoch ist die Musik frisch und positiv energetisch, hat etwas Suchendes und gleichzeitig Motivierendes an sich und passt gerade deshalb irgendwie immer richtig gut.
